Thursday 11 March was a cold and showery day but that didn’t deter the 25 players from around the Wellington region playing in the Masterton Petanque Open Melee. Silverstream members Graham Jackson, Ian Richards, Petrina Anderson and Lorraine Gray took part and following five rounds the winner was decided by the number of wins and best differential. A great result for Silverstream with Graham Jackson winning with four wins and a draw. Congratulations and extremely well done on a great win against some very strong competition. An enjoyable and very satisfying day! |

On Saturday, 6 th February, four Petanque members, Graham Jackson, Peter Matthews, Ian Richards and Lorraine Gray travelled to Levin to take part in the Arohanui Hospice Charity Melee. The weather was beautiful and it was a fun day with 38 players competing.
Each player drew a number and competed randomly with and against a wide range of players from clubs throughout the Wellington area. The person with the most wins and best differential at the end of five games won, and although the trophy didn’t come to Silverstream, congratulations to Ian who did extremely well and finished fifth with four wins – well done! It was a thoroughly enjoyable day with raffles, a sausage sizzle and spot prizes. As a result, with thanks to the sponsors and players, the Hospice benefitted by $680 Sixteen teams of two from 9 Petanque Clubs took part in this year's Wellington Interclub Competition which was held at Horowhenua Club (Levin) on Saturday 30th January.
Two teams entred from Silverstream: Team A: Claire Bradburn, Brian Bradburn, Rachel Clarke and Graeme Pilcher Team B: Owen Davie, Graham Jackson, Lorraine Gray and Ian Richards. At the end of the preliminary rounds Silverstream A was in 4th place, and Silverstream B in 5th place This meant that Silverstream A had to play Silverstream B, meaning in the final quarter only one Silverstream team could go through to the semi finals. Silvertream A lost to Manawatu on the Count back. It was considered by all to be an enjoyable successful day out in good weather.
The Silverstream Petanque triples were held on a cool and blustery Wednesday 20th January. Twelve Players were involved which equated to 4 teams.
The results are as follows: 1st - With 3 Wins were Claire Bradburn, Brian Bradburn and Graeme Pilcher 2nd - With 2 Wins were Lorraine Gray, Sheryl Hunt and Petrina Anderson. 3rd - With 1 Win were Graham Jackson, Peter Matthews and Ian Richards 4th - With 0 Wins were Owen Davie, Euan Evers and Helen Evers. A great day of play enjoyed by all!
This event was held on Wednesday 30th September on a beautiful sunny, no wind, day.
Seven teams entered, one of which included SBC President Aaron Wall. The Championship was run as a Random Draw Competition over 5 rounds with a bye in each round. Every team played 4 games, then the two top teams played the final. These qualifying rounds included some very good close games. The Final was between Rachel Clarke and Graham Pilcher (the previous winners of the Club Doubles Championship) and Graham Jackson and Tim Lovell-Smith. The 2020 Club Doubles Championship results were: Winners: Graham Jackson and Tim Lovell-Smith with a score of 13, Runners Up: Rachel Clarke and Graham Pilcher with a score of 9. Rachel Clarke and Claire Bradburn played in the Regional Women’s Doubles and Triples over the
weekend of 26 & 27 September. The Doubles were played on Saturday in fine weather and after the first 4 games Rachel and Claire were in fourth place, but unfortunately they didn’t carry their form through to the sudden death rounds and finished 5th equal. The Triples Competition, played on Sunday was different from the start. Heavy rain overnight meant the terrain had a lot of water on the pistes, although the jack didn’t float in any puddles. (this is an actual test done to see if an area is playable within the rules). Rachel and Claire with Ngaire Eriksen from Horowhenua Club played the first two rounds in heavy, wind-blown rain and then the skies cleared for the 3rd and 4th rounds. At this stage they were 2nd overall. The semifinals were played in reasonable weather against a team of three NZ Representatives, Rachel, Claire and Ngaire won 13-8. Then to the final against a team which included two NZ representatives to our one. No sooner had the game started than the gale-force wind brought rain. The team started well, going out to 8-2 when one bad end gave their opponents 5 points cutting our lead to 1. Our team refocused and although the rain turned to hail for a while they kept on track to win the Championship 13-8. A fantastic result! |
