Claire Bradburn has been selected to represent NZ in the Asian Championships in Vientiane, Laos over the 5th to 8th October. She will be playing Singles, doubles, triples and competing in a shooting tournament.
Claire has also been selected to represent NZ at the Oceania tournament in Christchurch over 25th to 29th October. This involves Singles, Doubles, Triples, Shooting and Pointing. This has been a busy year for Claire starting with the Trans Tasman 18/19 of March – NZ Won- then the World Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles in Ghent, Belgium over 13th to 16th April. 2018 will probably only have the Trans Tasman in Australia.
The following update is by Claire Bradburn who played in this event. The Annual Challenge between NZ and Australia was held at Adelaide on 18/19 March. NZ has previously dominated the competition. The NZ Seniors had previously won 9 out of 12 with the last loss being in Rotorua in 2014.
After the first day Australia were ahead 32 to 28 but with another 60 points up for grabs on the Sunday NZ felt all we needed to do was hit them hard early. We knew we needed to attack before it got too hot. Saturday was 34c and Sunday was expected to get hotter which it did. Unfortunately the day didn’t go as planned and by the 5th and last round we were well back, but a win was possible, all we had to do was win 5 of the 6 Mixed Doubles. Our best performing Mixed Doubles team lost 13-0 early in the piece. Claire and her partner had not had a good run but came to the party with a 13-1 win. The last 4 games were hard fought and it wasn’t until the last boule was thrown that we knew we had made it. We were all exhausted including the Coach and Manager. This was Claire’s 10 Trans Tasman and one of the hardest fought. So Seniors Won 61-59 but the Open team lost 55-65 having previously won 9 tournaments in a row. Claire Bradburn Congratulations to Claire Bradburn who has been selected to play in the Woman's Senior Team to take part in the 2017 Trans-Tasman match, to be held in Adelaide on the 18th and 19th of March. Claire has also been selected to represent NZ at the World Championships in Belgium in April. The NZ team will consist of two men and two women. Club Triples Championship was held 8th February with the following results:
Winners: Barry Sarney, Adrienne Billing, Judith Boullon. Second: Peter Matthews, Mike Turner, Lorraine Gray. Third: Claire Bradburn, Brian Bradburn, John Hall. Fourth: Tim Lovell-Smith, Owen Davie, Barbara Bateman. We recently reported in Latest News (on 21st March) the success of member Claire Bradburn at the Oceania Championships in Vanuatu. We now have some photos from the event which was held in less than ideal conditions! The slide show below shows (1) the winning New Zealand team (Claire is on the left), (2) the start of play on the second day, (3) the results of a tropical thunderstorm which halted the evening session and (4) efforts to drain the arena before the evening session was called off. We recently received this report from Tim Lovell-Smith: "Claire Bradburn, Silverstream along with Jean Parley and Margaret Maher from Auckland are now the Oceania Women’s Triples Champions. This is the first time NZ has had any of its teams get past the second round. In the quarter finals they beat a team from Tahiti who are seen as the top Country in Oceania. In the semi finals they took out New Caledonia, meaning they had to beat Wallace in the final. This game started about 9pm and after 2 ends players had to leave the terrain and attend a dinner and formal ceremony attended by the Minister and other dignitaries. The NZ team returned to the terrain as soon as the speeches were over rather than have a meal. When the officials returned the game recommenced and ended up finishing at 12.30am. with NZ winning 15-11. All finals were played to 15 but the rest went to 11. Claire, Jean and Margaret were popular winners and were given great support during the final particularly from the Vanuatu players and locals. NZ has been last in the standings and while this didn’t change the position for the Team it was a great boost for all concerned. The presentations finished at 1.30am. Claire has a quick turnaround getting home on Tuesday afternoon and going to Alexandra on Thursday as she is in the Trans-Tasman team to play Australia." Well done Claire!
Claire has also been selected to represent New Zealand at the Oceania Championship in Vanuatu in March 2016. Last weekend Claire and Brian Bradburn represented Wellington against Southern in Otaki and next weekend are competing in the National Senior Doubles in Kapiti, followed by trials for the New Zealand Senior Team to play Australia in March 2016.
